COLERAINE BOROUGH COUNCIL'S Guided Walks Programme - Summer 2004

Hill-walking in Glenullin began in 1994 when a number of members of Glenullin & Agivey Conservation & Development Group attended a hill-walking course delivered by a professional consultant. The course enabled the local participants to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to research walks in the hills and valleys that make up the land mass of Glenullin. Having completed that first phase, the consultant came back, walked the proposed routes, made changes and recommendations where required and talked to the land-owners. In phase two, we learned navigation, how to use the map and compass and the duty of care required that would enable us to lead and guide groups of walkers who came to our area.

Since those early days, four walks have been developed and are used by walkers from a wide area.
No.1 is a 12 kilometre high-level ridge walk reaching Benbradagh (1536ft) where unsurpassed views can be enjoyed and guides have the opportunity to point out the features of interest, which include the flora and fauna, the archaeology and geology and the legend of this particular area.

No. 2 is 10 kilometres. Walkers can see at first hand a steep-sided scarp-edge plunge pool, a legacy of the retreating ice from the last period of glaciation, then made their way to a viewing point 900ft.

The two way-marked trails are in the Glenullin valley, with story-boards pointing out the main features to see on both walks.

The four walks briefly described above are all circular, with ample car-parking and can be easily accessed. More information can be had from the local Resource Centre.

We market these walks as an open university, where people can come and participate in a themed walk, or just for health and recreation. We cater for seasoned walkers, casual walkers and campsites are also available. Accommodation includes self-catering, B & B's and hotels.

Glenullin has a rich and varied number of archaeological sites, which tell us that we had human habitation going back to the early Iron Age. This gives us the strength to look to the culture with determination and confidence that will sustain as we Build and Deliver a Better quality of life.
